Keeping My Mom Safe, Happy, and Healthy

When we found out that my mom was experiencing signs of dementia, we didn't take the news lightly. We were concerned about her well-being, and I knew that she couldn't keep living on her own. To keep her safe, I decided to enroll her in a nursing home that specialized in mental health care. She was concerned about the change at first, but as soon as she moved in, she only had positive things to say about her new digs. She loved the ability to get in touch with doctors the same day, and she was even able to make a few friends along the way. This blog is all about keeping your parents safe, happy and healthy.

3 Clues That Can Indicate A Need For Assisted Living Arrangements

Lisa Sutton

If you have a loved one that is getting up there in years, you might have found yourself wondering when it will be time to possibly consider helping them move into an assisted living facility instead of just using the occasional home care services. You might also wonder whether you are going to know what the signs are. To help you with this, you will want to check out the following clues.

You Are Worried About Leaving Them At Home Alone

If you have been worried about the safety of your elderly loved one when they are left at home alone, it might be time to start talking about moving into a place that provides elderly home care services. This is especially important if your senior family member has already had a fall or an injury from some sort of accident in the house when they did not have a home nurse or aid around to help them. They will not be at as much of risk for falling at the fully staffed nursing home, but should they have an accident of some sort, there will be several people there to help them.

They Are Not Taking Care Of Themselves Well Enough

It could be that they are not showering enough because they are depressed or because they are afraid of falling. If they are only able to tend to their personal hygiene when the home care nurse or aid is there a couple of times a week, that is not good. There could also be an issue with their medication. If you suspect that they are not taking their medication as prescribed, you will want to find out why. Not dosing medication properly can lead to serious medical problems. At an assisted care home, there will be someone around to ensure that they are clean, well fed, and that their medications are taken properly.

You Suspect That Their Loneliness Is Turning Into Depression

As many people age, they find that a lot of friends are either passing away or moving away to be with family or to live in a senior care facility. If they are becoming depressed due to the lack of interaction with others, moving them into an assisted living facility can be great as they can make friends there. There will be activities that they can do to stay active, such as community dances, Bingo nights, physical therapy, and many more. You can talk with the admissions department about the various activities that they generally have planned for their residents.

You will want to make a list of a few different assisted living facilities in the area so you can start calling them one by one. Ask questions and take notes. Schedule an appointment to take your loved one to the care home so you can tour it together. Find an assisted senior living facility in your area today.
